Importance of Safety Observations Preventing Incidents

Many companies have experienced success in reducing the number of incidents or injuries to their employees by promoting Safety Observation Reporting or Near Miss Reporting Programs. Near miss incidents, unsafe acts and unsafe conditions can often be recognized and corrected before loss producing events occur.

When an organization does not have a reporting culture where employees are encouraged to report close calls, many opportunities to prevent incidents are lost. History has shown repeatedly that most loss producing events (incidents), both serious and catastrophic, were preceded by warnings or near miss incidents, unsafe behavior, and unsafe conditions. Recognizing and reporting safety observations can significantly improve worker safety and enhance an organization’s safety culture.

Successful programs all have at least one thing in common - active participation by everyone in the organization.

Our Safe By Choice EHS Excellence Program recognizes the value in the proactive reporting of safety observations found in the workplace and in private life. These observations, when properly acted upon, will encourage someone to continue to behave in a safe manner or correct an unsafe act or condition that could lead to an injury. It has been proven that the increase in EHS awareness, brought about by observation and reporting programs, is an important factor in reducing incidents and injuries. Our safety observation program empowers employees with the opportunity to make corrections to unsafe conditions, to correct someone’s unsafe acts, and to recognize someone for positive safety

Some important benefits of observation programs include:

  • Informs others of hazards that they may not be aware of
  • Is a forum to generate safety discussions (big or small)
  • Documents actions taken by individuals that can correct things within their control
  • Others can learn from these incidents
  • Documents items that need followed up on by others
  • Increases Safety Awareness
  • Safety Observation Programs Prevent Injuries

Companies who excel at safety and who target zero incidents utilize safety observation reporting in various ways, whether as a leading indicator of safety performance, a component of a hazard identification and corrective action system, or as a mechanism for engaging and empowering employees at different levels throughout an organization.

At the end of the day we want everyone to go home healthy and injury free.
